The Dalmatian Will Be There Too!
Howdy, folks! Every year the State Fair of Texas brings the perfect blend of traditional favorites and fresh, new attractions – this year is no different. There is one exhibit in particular that’s already creating major buzz – the world-famous Budweiser Clydesdales. Last seen at the Fair in 2005, the Clydesdales are making a long-awaited return to the 2016 State Fair of Texas.
Quiz anyone on their favorite Super Bowl commercial and many might say it’s one of the Budweiser Clydesdales commercials. Remember the puppy running after his Clydesdale friend? How about the Clydesdales playing football in the snow? You now will have a chance to see these beautiful animals up close at this year’s State Fair.
“The Budweiser Clydesdales were always a huge attraction at the Fair and we are excited to welcome them back as one of our featured exhibits this year,” says State Fair President Mitchell Glieber. “The State Fair of Texas is an event built on 130 years of tradition, and the Clydesdales bring people that same sense of tradition and history. Getting to see the Budweiser Clydesdales in person is not something you experience every day, and this is definitely an experience you can share with the whole family.”
The Clydesdales’ origins date back to 1933 when brothers August A. Busch, Jr. and Adolphus Busch III surprised their father with a gift to commemorate the repeal of the Prohibition of beer. That gift was a six-horse Clydesdale hitch. The horses drew so much positive attention that it didn’t take long for the family to realize the Clydesdales might be a good marketing tool. The family sent another six-horse hitch to New York City to celebrate the end of Prohibition there. People loved the giant horses with the huge hooves. The company continued to travel the amazing Clydesdales around the country. It was a match made in marketing heaven!
There’s still one more part to this story. What about the Dalmatian that’s always seen with the Clydesdale horses? Historically, the role of the dog was to guard the wagon and protect the team while the driver made deliveries. The dog turned out to be a great mascot and now travels with the Budweiser Clydesdales everywhere they go. The mascot goes by the name Clyde – an ode to his famous horse companions. Clyde’s place is on the wagon right next to the driver. He even stays in the stables with his equine friends and will be present during the Fair.
Did you know that in order to pull a wagon for Budweiser, a Clydesdale must be 18 hands tall and weigh between 1,800 and 2,300 pounds? However, their handlers say they are gentle giants. You can see the majestic Budweiser Clydesdales, and learn more fun facts like this, all 24 days of the Fair. The horses’ caretakers will be on-hand to answer questions and demonstrate the hitching process. You’ll find the stable at Chevrolet Park Plaza.
The Clydesdales are just one of many outstanding exhibits at this year’s Fair. After a history-making run at the Grammy Museum in Los Angeles, “The Taylor Swift Experience™” is making its way to the Lone Star State as a featured exhibit at the State Fair of Texas. The exhibit showcases a special collection of memorabilia that has never been displayed in this unique combination before, including memorable performance costumes, tour photos and instruments. The Fair is thrilled to host this one-of-a-kind exhibit in the historic Hall of State building, with the excitement of providing an attraction that appeals to all ages.
Adults and kids alike will love the all-new Lords of Gravity Basketball Slam Dunk Show. This high-energy group is one of the most famous acrobatic basketball teams in Europe, wowing crowds with their jaw-dropping hoop skills. Speaking of skills – did you know you can do more on a pogo stick than jump up and down? In the new extreme sports show, Xpogo, two professionals entertain guests with gravity-defying flips and spins you never knew could be done on a pogo stick.
Last, but certainly not least – the food! What decadent delicacy will everyone be talking about this year? The annual Big Tex Choice Awards started as a friendly cooking competition among concessionaires leading up to the Fair. Nowadays the crazy culinary concoctions garner attention from around the world and this year the two winners are no exception.
